Information Guide

This is your go-to guide for all details regarding our 2025, End-of-Year Show for Prep-Grade 6 Nook dancers.

WHAT is the End-of-Year (EOY) Show?

The Nook Dance Centre End-of-Year Show is an opportunity to bring our community together in one place and celebrate our wonderful Nook Dancers! Each Ballet and Contemporary Dance class from Prep through to grade 6 performs a short dance piece in the show. Each class will be provided with costumes to wear for the show (and keep afterwards). Our goal is for each and every Nook dancer to have a relaxed, positive performance experience and we work hard to prepare them appropriately for this event so that they feel comfortable and confident on the stage.

This is a ticketed event meaning family/friends will need to purchase tickets to come and watch the show. More information on tickets below.

WHEN is the 2025 EOY Show?

This year, our shows will be held on Sunday the 16th of November, 2025. There is also a compulsory dress/tech rehearsal on Thursday the 13th of November, after school hours.
(More details regarding specific times under the ‘arrival times’ heading).

WHO is performing in the EOY show?

The End-of-Year Show is for children enrolled in a Prep-Grade 6 Ballet or Contemporary Dance class at Nook Dance Centre who have opted IN for this performance opportunity. Each class will prepare and present a dance piece in the show.
Prep-Grade 1 Dancers will perform in one of the two shows (more details further down) and Grade 2-6 dancers will perform in BOTH shows on the day.

Children enrolled in a Tots, Jumping Jacks or Mummy/Daddy and Me class participate in a different end-of-year event called Presentation Day. Please contact Tammy for information about Presentation Day.

WHERE will the 2025 EOY show be held?

For the first time, our show will be held at:
The Benedictine Theatre at Santa Maria College, Northcote: 50 separation St, Northcote.

We are super excited about our move to this beautiful, spatious theatre which we know our families will love.

Parking and Public Transport

If driving, we recommend parking at the Northcote plaza and walking across to Santa Maria. If you are taking public transport, the 86 tram stops 300 metres away from the college (on High St). Northcote train station is a 10 minute walk.

Costumes

Each child participating in the End-of-Year Show will receive a costume to wear. The costumes are carefully selected to match the style of dance and the ‘mood’ of the piece your child is performing in. In some cases, we give the dancers a choice of costume A or costume B or we select a costume that we think all our dancers will be comfortable in.

In the lead up to the show, Tammy will be trying costumes on the kids during classes. Once the costumes are ready to go, we will hand them out to your dancer at one of their classes. You will take the costume home and please hang it up somewhere it will stay clean and safe from damage. We don’t tend to have spare costumes so please take care of yours. The costumes cannot be worn out of the house before the dress/tech rehearsal and show day.

Please note: Costumes will only be handed out when your term 4 invoice has been paid in full.

Dress/Tech Rehearsal, Thursday the 13th of November (COMPULSORY)

Dress and tech rehearsal is an important part of performing in any show. Tech/dress rehearsal allows our Nook dancers the opportunity to practice their dance on stage before they perform for an audience. It can be disorientating the first time our dancers practice their dance on a stage instead of in their familiar hall/studio. The tech rehearsal helps the kids get their bearings in preparation for the real performance. Dress/tech rehearsal is also when our sound and lighting technician gets to practice her job (which is pretty important!).

In order to participate in the show it is compulsory for our dancers to attend the tech rehearsal on the 13th of November. Failure to attend the tech rehearsal may mean your child will not be permitted to perform in the show. Please ensure your child attends the tech rehearsal!!

On dress/tech rehearsal day, the Nook dancers will be signed in at the theatre entrance by a parent/guardian. Then the dancers will go through and sit in the theatre seats for the duration of their rehearsal. The dancers take it in turns to practice their dance on stage and while they wait they get to watch some of the other class-groups rehearsing on stage.
Parents will drop off and pick up for dress/tech rehearsal (times below). For child safety reasons, the only adults permitted to come into the theatre will be our staff and parent volunteers who have registered to help at tech rehearsal. If you would like to be a parent helper, please keep an eye out for my email requesting helpers in the next few weeks!

In previous years, we haven’t insisted on kids wearing their costumes to tech rehearsal in order to keep things simple for our Nook families. This year, if it’s possible for kids to attend the tech rehearsal in their costume that would be helpful as we can see how the costumes look on stage, however it is not mandatory. Our priority is having the kids signed in on time for the rehearsal and if that’s already a challenge, please don’t worry about the costume for dress/tech.

Family/friends are welcome to come and see the grade 2-6 dancers outside their backstage waiting area (this is near the sign in table) in between shows.

What to wear on show day:

  • Full costume provided by Nook.

  • Any zip-up or button-up shirt or jacket over the top.

  • Slide on shoes (e.g. Crocs).

  • No Jewellery and no watches including Fitbits.

Hair for the show:

Ballet students: Long hair pulled back neatly in either a Ballet bun or a single plait.

Contemporary students: Long hair pulled back off face, any hairstyle*

*
The Grade 4-6 Contemporary class require ‘half-up-half-down’ hairstyle. Please contact Tammy with any questions.

Hair ties and clips that match your child’s hair colour are preferred. Please don’t add any extra hair accessories that stand out e.g. bows, coloured headbands, colourful hair clips or hair extensions.

Make-up for the show:

The point of stage make-up is to make a performer’s features visible to the whole audience (even the back row) under stage lights. When done correctly, stage make-up looks very different (much bolder) to regular make-up.

At Nook, wearing make-up for show day is optional. Some of our kids like to lean right into full ‘performance mode’ and wear it for the show day and others do not. Either option is fine by us.
We do ask that kids don’t wear any coloured face paints, glitter or stick on gems for the show. (Although all of these things are fabulous in other contexts!)

What to bring to the show

On Show Day, your child should bring 1 bag containing:

  • A labelled, full bottle of water.

  • Ballet shoes (for all Ballet students)

  • LOTS of mess-free snacks!! (Nothing that can spill please e.g. no yoghurt, sauces, dips, or drinks other than water).

  • Quiet activities (optional) e.g. games, playing cards, a book to read, colouring in/activity books.

  • Medication in a labelled zip-lock bag (if applicable).

Do NOT Bring:

  • Valuable possessions e.g. Ipad, jewellery, mobile phone (let Tammy know if your child needs this), special toys that you wouldn’t want to risk losing.

  • Textas/ markers or paints (pencils and crayons only please!)

    Tickets

Our End-of-Year Show is a ticketed event. If you would like to watch the show, you will need to purchase a ticket to do so. Ticket sales pay for the venue hire and theatre staff fees. We will have a standard and child/concession ticket price available.

Children under 2 who can sit on an adult’s lap do not require a ticket.
Unlike previous years, there will be no restrictions placed on how many tickets you can purchase. Santa Maria’s theatre is much bigger than our previous venue. You will be welcome to purchase as many tickets as you would like to. There wont be assigned seating, so you will be able to sit with family/friends who book tickets separately.

Videography

This year, both the 2.30PM and 4.30PM shows will be recorded by Zack from ZIL Visual Media. When the footage is ready, a private link to view the footage on Nook’s Vimeo account will be sent to all participating Nook families. This is likely to be available in the weeks following the show TBC.

Parent Volunteers

We are seeking some fabulous parents/guardians who are able to help out backstage at our upcoming End-of-Year Show Day (Sunday the 16th of Nov) and/or tech rehearsal (Thursday the 13th of Nov).

Parent helpers have an important job on both tech rehearsal day and show day. They assist with supervision, provide support and care where needed and guide and encourage our dancers throughout the day.

In order to be a parent helper for our tech rehearsal and/or show day, you will need to provide a photo of your valid Working with Children Check. If you don’t have a current WWCC, you can apply for a free, volunteer WWCC and it usually gets approved pretty quickly. You will also need to sign a code of conduct before the event to ensure you understand out child safety requirements.

Below are the times that we need parent helpers for:

  • Parent Helpers for tech rehearsal for Prep-Grade 1 groups - time required: 4.00-5.15PM

  • Parent Helpers for tech rehearsal for Grade 2-6 groups - time required: 5.00-6.30PM

  • Parent Helpers for 2.30PM Show on Sunday the 16th of November - time required: 2.00-4.00PM

  • Parent Helpers for 4.30PM Show on Sunday the 16th of November - time required: 4.00-6.00PM

If you would like to help with tech rehearsal AND Show Day, you are most welcome to! Please let us know.

If you’re helping on Show Day and want to watch your dancer perform in their dance, you will be able to slip into the front row, reserved seats for parent helpers and watch your child perform in their dance piece when it is their turn.

If you have a grade 2-6 dancer, you may not yet know if you would like to buy tickets for the 2.30PM or 4.30PM show (as your child will be performing in both) and therefore you wont know which show you can help with at this stage. That’s fine. Please just let us know you’re happy to help at one of the shows for now.

If you can help with any of the above times, please get in touch by emailing info@nookdancecentre.com.au and let us know. That will be super helpful!

Many thanks for your ongoing support!
